Since April 2025, the BIKO-LAMB professional development programme has been recognised by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) as equivalent to the supplementary qualification for teachers of German as a second language in adult education (ZQ-DaZ), thereby enabling graduates to be granted admission to teach on integration courses. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is the central institution in Germany responsible for matters relating to migration, integration and social cohesion. Through its support for and coordination of integration measures, the BAMF plays a key role in enabling immigrants to participate actively in society. As part of this, it coordinates, amongst other things, the delivery of integration courses, which consist of a language course and an orientation course.
The BAMF monitors the quality of integration courses and, as part of this, grants admission to course providers and teachers. It therefore also sets out the binding requirements for teaching on integration courses. One way to obtain admission as a teacher on integration courses is to acquire the additional qualification for teachers in the field of German as a second language in adult education (ZQ-DaZ). Under certain conditions, the BIKO-LAMB professional development programme may be recognised by the BAMF as equivalent to the ZQ-DaZ.
Under what conditions is BIKO-LAMB considered equivalent to ZQ-DaZ?
Teacher education students at Leibniz University Hannover who have German as their first or second (teaching) subject can, after completing their bachelor's degree, have the BIKO-LAMB professional development programme – which they have undertaken outside the curriculum – recognised by the BAMF as equivalent to the DaZ supplementary qualification.
The specific requirements for recognition are as follows:
- A bachelor's degree in a teacher training programme at Leibniz University Hannover with German as a first or second (teaching) subject (the programme may be started during the Bachelor’s degree)
- Proof of enrolment in the compulsory elective module ‘German as a Second and Foreign Language’ (S 5) as part of the degree programme
- Full extracurricular completion of the BIKO-LAMB programme
- Completion of the placement in Module D at an institution with a focus on DaZ/DaF in adult education
